When weighing several options, such as the propulsion type or building material, a life-cycle analysis is the best tool to evaluate the environmental impact of either choice. As an example, the choice between aluminium and steel as a building material depends on the fuel burn during the lifetime of the vessel - more for heavier steel - but also on the energy needed to produce the material, which is more for aluminium.
